4 Creative Ways to Capture Back to School Moments

August 2, 2013

Happy August!  With summer nearing an end, many of you are preparing to send your little ones off to school again.  Meet the Teacher nights, school supply shopping amidst the classroom-themed aisles, and picking out new clothes can really hype you up for that big day.  My niece and nephews are heading back to school and my youngest nephew is starting Kindergarten–what an exciting time!  If you’re like me, you’re probably thinking up poses for photos, especially if it’s the FIRST first day of school for your little one.  Here are some great ideas for capturing that exciting Back to School moment for your kids:

1. The Printed Sign
If you’re handy with design software, you can create your own sign and print it out for your kids to hold in their photo.  I recommend using card stock versus regular printer paper.  Incorporate some fun school-themed clip art and use nice large font that you’ll be able to read clearly.  Or you can just use these free printables:

2. Chalkboard Sign
Chalkboards are an easy option that you can reuse every year for each of your students.  You can make your own using chalkboard paint and a nice sturdy board or just pick up a small chalkboard for a few dollars at the store.  Chalk markers make it easy to write on the board if you’re not so handy with the old fashioned kind.  This great idea was on Pinterest (source unknown):

3. Sidewalk Chalk Pose
Another chalk option that the kids can help with is a sidewalk chalk pose.  Chalk out the grade and a cool design for your kid to pose next to.  If you won’t have a lot of time in the morning for an art session (and you anticipate good overnight weather), complete your creation the night before in your driveway and snap pictures in the morning.  But be sure to check for chalk spots on those new school clothes when you’re done!  This is how Becca at Blue Cricket Design captured her kids’ first day of school:

4. Elmer’s 1st Day App
This is a free app for iPhone and Android that lets you take photos, add quotes and captions, organize photos, and share with your friends and family via email, Facebook or Twitter.  It’s quick to download and easy to use.
